Nagaur City near Jodhpur, Rajasthan is a secure desert city. It is situated about 135 kms to the northeast of Jodhpur. Nagaur lies about midway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. The Jodhpur Nagaur City dates back to the 4th century AD. It was at the center of Muslim invasions from Central Asia.
The focal attraction of the Nagaur city is the Ahhichatragarh Fort. The Ahhichatragarh Fort is a medium sized fort. The Mughal Emperors Akbar and Shahjahan got this fort constructed. Inside the fort, is the Mughal Garden, still retaining its original pleasant appearance. Also inside the walls of the fort are palaces, mosques, temples, baolis (reservoirs), water systems, fountains, open terraces, etc dating to the time of Mughals. Dominating the landscape is a five-domed mosque built by Akbar. Also adorning the walls of the fort and ceilings of the palaces are beautiful painting.
Every year in the month of January-February Nagaur fair is held in the city. Weeklong cattle fair, it is the second biggest fair in India. It is especially famous for its puppeteers. So, if you have children, this place is a must see for you in February. Another good time to visit the city is during the Ramdeoji Ka Mela and Tejaji ka Mela in February and August respectively.
